INTRODUCTION:

The purpose of this page is to document Scriptural references that relate to the importance of 'keeping' or observing the Sabbath.

I am also collecting references that detail the instructions and restrictions required to properly observe the Sabbath.

Sabbath/Shabath/Shabbat (H7676) - intensive from 'shabath' (7673); intermission, i.e (specifically) the Sabbath:--(+ every) sabbath.; (H) - to rest, cease {7673} (notes data page); (G4521) - of Hebrew origin (shabbath H7676); the Sabbath (i.e. Shabbath), or day of weekly repose from secular avocations (also the observance or institution itself); by extension, a se'nnight, i.e. the interval between two Sabbaths; likewise the plural in all the above applications:--sabbath (day), week.

BLESSED AND SANCTIFIED:

KJV Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Did you know that there is not another scripture in the Bible that uses the words "Blessed" and "Hallowed" in the same sentence except the one for the Sabbath?

What does Blessed and Hallowed mean in the Concordance?

sanctify

observe and keep the holy Sabbath

ceremonially or morally and

dedicate this day appoint(ed) by God and

praise Him abundantly

altogether

kneel(ing)

to greatly thank Him and

Bless God and

He indeed blesses man for keeping His Sabbath.

If we don't keep the Sabbath, we:

commit treason,

curse God (and vice versa) by euphemism blaspheme and indeed defile the Sabbath greatly.

In Genesis, God blessed and sanctified the 7th day.

KJV Genesis 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:

2 'And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.'

3 'And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.'

YHWH santified the seventh day.

Exodus 16:23-30

The weekly Sabbath is established using the availability of manna.

23 'And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.'  (KJV)

'And he said to them, "This is what YHWH has said, 'Tomorrow is a rest, a Sabbath set-apart to YHWH.  That which you bake, bake; and that which you cook, cook.  And lay up for yourselves all that is left over, to keep it until morning.'"'  (Besorah)

In this verse Mosheh is instructing the people to cook and heat what is needed and what is left over is to be used on the Sabbath.

24 'And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.'

25 'And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field.'

26 'Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.'

27 'And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.'

28 'And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?'

29 'See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.'

YHWH is instructing us to stay in our place on the Sabbath.  I think this means we are not to leave our homes.  I need to compare this to HIS instructions for Passover when HE told us to stay in our homes.  I think the Messiah traveled on the Sabbath.  I need to check into this.

30 'So the people rested on the seventh day.'

In this chapter, YHWH is using the availability of manna to teach the people the importance of the weekly Sabbath.

The seventh day of the week, the weekly Sabbath, was observed before the Ten Words were given on Mt. Sinai.

Exodus 20:8-11

The weekly Sabbath is detailed in the Ten (10) Commandments.

8 'Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.'

Weekly sabbath.  Commandment # 4

9 'Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: '

Weekly sabbath.  Commandment # 4

10 'But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: '

Weekly sabbath.  Commandment # 4

11 'For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. '

Weekly sabbath.  Commandment # 4

Exodus 23:12

The weekly Sabbath.

12 'Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.'

Weekly Sabbath

Exodus 31:13-17

The weekly Sabbath is established as a sign between YHWH and the children of Israel.

13 'Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.'

A sign between the children of Israel and YHWH forever.

It is also a commandment at this point. The 4th commandment.

14 'Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.'

15 'Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.'

16 'Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.'

'...throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.'  This seems pretty clear.

17 'It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.'

The weekly Sabbath is to be a sign between the children of Israel and YHWH for ever.

21 'Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.'

Exodus 35:1-3

The no fires restriction is detailed.

1 'And Moses gathered all the congregation of the children of Israel together, and said unto them, These are the words which the LORD hath commanded, that ye should do them.'

2 'Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.'

The Sabbath is a holy day and no work is to be done on the Sabbath.

3 'Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.'

You shall not kindle a fire on the Sabbath.

Kindle means to start.  Can we keep a fire going if it has already been started?

3 'Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.'

No work is to be done on the weekly Sabbath.

holy convocation = set-apart gathering.

32 'And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day.'

A man was gathering sticks on the Weekly sabbath.

33 'And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation.'

34 'And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him.'

35 'And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.'

36 'And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the LORD commanded Moses.'

12 'Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.'

Keep the Weekly sabbath as commanded.

13 'Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:'

Work for six days.

14 'But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.'

No one is to work on the Weekly sabbath.

15 'And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.'

The YHWH brought us out of Mitsrayim and has commaned us to keep the Weekly sabbath.

1 'Thus saith the LORD, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed.'  (KJV)

2 'Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil.'  (KJV)

3 'Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.'  (KJV)

4 'For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;'  (KJV)

5 'Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.'  (KJV)

6 'Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant;'  (KJV)

7 'Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.'  (KJV)

8 'The Lord GOD, which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him.'  (KJV)

Isaiah 58:13-14
The Sabbath is not a day to do as we want to.

13 'If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:'

14 'Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.'

Isaiah 66:23

Millennial Reign Sabbath

23 'And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.'  (KJV)

This verse is referring to ALL the people of the earth.

21 'Thus saith the LORD; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem; '

22 'Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers. '

24 'And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith the LORD, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein;'

Jeremiah 34:13-14

7th Year Release

13 "Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondmen, saying,"  (KJV)

14 "At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear."  (KJV)

12 'Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them. '

13 'But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly polluted: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.'

16 'Because they despised my judgments, and walked not in my statutes, but polluted my sabbaths: for their heart went after their idols.'

20 'And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God.'

21 'Notwithstanding the children rebelled against me: they walked not in my statutes, neither kept my judgments to do them, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; they polluted my sabbaths: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness.'

24 'Because they had not executed my judgments, but had despised my statutes, and had polluted my sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers' idols.'  (KJV)

14 'And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:'  (KJV)

Nehemiah 13:19

When does the Sabbath start?

19 'And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.'  (KJV)

This verse seems to support the idea that the Sabbath begins at sunset.

14 'Behold, I build an house to the name of the LORD my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the LORD our God. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.'  (KJV)

Solomon/Shelomoh reiterates that burning incense, continual shewbread and burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of YHWH are an ordinance for ever to Israel/Yisra'ĕl.

17 'Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.'

18 'For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.'

1 'At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat.'

YAHUSHUA was out of the house on the Sabbath. He was on the way to the synagogue (verse 9).

Does this mean it is okay to travel on the Sabbath?

5 'And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.'

It would appear that it is acceptable to heal on the Sabbath.

Mark 6:2

Teaching on the Sabbath

2 'And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?'

Travel

1 'And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.'

10 "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."  (KJV)

I am not sure if this is referring to the Sabbath or not.

SABBATH CONDUCT:

34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.  (KJV)

The Messiah is rebuking the Pharisees on the sabbath.
The fact that this is the sabbath is established in Matthew 12:1 which states that day of these events was the sabbath.

15 "For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. "  (KJV)

The Messiah is rebuking the people on the sabbath.
The fact that this is the sabbath is established in verse 1 which shows continuity with Matthew 12:1 which states that day of these events was the sabbath.

25 "And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. "  (KJV)

The Messiah rebuked an unclean spirit on the sabbath.
The fact that this is the sabbath is established in verse 1.

35 "And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. "  (KJV)

The Messiah rebuked an unclean spirit on the sabbath.
The fact that this is the sabbath is established in verse 16 and verse 31.

14 "And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day."  (KJV)

15 "The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? "  (KJV)

16 "And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? "  (KJV)

17 "And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him."  (KJV)

The Messiah called the ruler of the synagogue a hypocrite on the sabbath.

7 "And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them."  (KJV)

8 "When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;"  (KJV)

9 "And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room."  (KJV)

10 "But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee."  (KJV)

14 "And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just."  (KJV)

The Messiah said we should not call our friends, brothers, kinsmen, nor rich neighbors.
Wouldn't this also include non believers who want to dine with us?
The fact that this is the sabbath is established in verse 1.

26 "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple."  (KJV)

The fact that this is the sabbath is established in verse 1.

The Messiah said we are to judge righteous judgements.
I do not know if this is the sabbath day that HE is speaking on.
