1Samuel Chapter 1

1Samuel Chapter 1

Samuel dedicated

1Samuel 1:11

11And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.(KJV)

This could be a Nazarite vow.
Numbers 6:2-3

1Samuel Chapter 2

1Samuel Chapter 2

The sons of Eli
The prophecy of doom to Eli

1Samuel 2:34

34And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.
This prophecy is fulfilled in 1Samuel 4:11.

1Samuel Chapter 3

1Samuel Chapter 3

YWHW calls Samuel

1Samuel 3:13

13For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
The house of Eli is being judged because he did not discipline his sons when they were wrong.

1Samuel Chapter 4

1Samuel Chapter 4

The death of Eli

1Samuel 4:11

11And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
This is a fulfillment of a prophecy made in 1Samuel 2:34

1Samuel Chapter 5

1Samuel Chapter 5

The Philistines move the ark

1Samuel 5:1-5

1And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.(KJV)

2When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.(KJV)

3And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.(KJV)

4And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.(KJV)

5Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.(KJV)

Think about where the mark of the beast will be placed! On the forehead and hand.

1Samuel Chapter 6

1Samuel Chapter 6

The ark returned to Israel

1Samuel 6:7

7Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:

milch - giving milk; bred or suitable primarily for milk production "milch goats, milch camels"
kine - archaic plural of cow

1Samuel 6:10

10And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:

milch - giving milk; bred or suitable primarily for milk production "milch goats, milch camels"
kine - archaic plural of cow

1Samuel 6:19

19And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

The looked into the ark of YHWH!!!

1Samuel Chapter 7

1Samuel Chapter 7

The Philistines defeated
8And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.

In this verse the people say "our" Elohim. Later they will say, '...pray to "your" Elohim...'

1Samuel Chapter 8

1Samuel Chapter 8

Israel demands a king

1Samuel 8:5

'5And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.'(KJV)

The people reject YHWH and desire a dynasty
This is where the children of Israel rejected YHWH and sought to be ruled by man.
What the people were really seeking was a dynasty.
They didn't want to trust YHWH to provide a leader when they needed one.
They wanted a dynastic line father to son to son like other nations.

1Samuel 8:7-9

7And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. (KJV)

8According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee. (KJV)

9Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them. (KJV)

1Samuel Chapter 9

1Samuel Chapter 9

Saul annointed by Samuel

1Samuel 9:9

9(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to enquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)

Before what time? I wonder if this is referring to pre-deluvian time.

1Samuel 9:15

15Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,

Samuel actually heard YHWH's voice.

1Samuel Chapter 10

1Samuel Chapter 10

Saul becomes king of Israel

1Samuel 10:1

1Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?(KJV)

What is meant by 'his inheritance? Who did HE inherit it from? Is this referring to YAHSHUA inheriting it from YHWH?

1Samuel 10:2-8

Samuel prophesizes to Saul.

2When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?

3Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:

4And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.

5After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:

6And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

According to the Strong's Concordance, this is the first use of the word prophesy.
See Prophesy Definition:

7And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.

8And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and shew thee what thou shalt do.

Samuel tells Saul to go to Gilgal, wait for seven days, and he (Samuel) will come to him, perform the sacrifices and offerings and show him (Saul) what to do.

1Samuel 10:16

16And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.
Why did Saul withhold this information from his uncle? I think this was a mistake.

1Samuel 10:27

27But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought no presents. But he held his peace.
The children of Belial did not like Saul.

1Samuel Chapter 11

1Samuel Chapter 11

The Ammonites defeated

1Samuel 11:1-3

1Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.
2And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.
3And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

The men of Jabesh were willing to make covenant with Nahash the Ammonite but he offered them a cruel covenant. The elders of Jabash asked for seven days to decide. I think this is because the new that Samuel (a prophet of YHWH) was coming in seven days and they wanted to wait for him.

1Samuel 11:6

6And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

The spirit of YHWH came onto Saul and he became angry. I'm not sure if this anger was what YHWH wanted.

1Samuel 11:9

9And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

I think this was a mistake. I think Saul was supposed to wait for seven days for Samuel to advise him on what to do.

1Samuel Chapter 12

1Samuel Chapter 12

Samuel addresses the people

1Samuel 12:3

3Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.(KJV)

Samuel asks the people to judge him before he speaks. The people find him not guilty.

1Samuel 12:10

10And they cried unto the LORD, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the LORD, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.(KJV)

Baalim and Ashtaroth

1Samuel 12:20

20And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart;(KJV)

Interesting. Even though the people had done wrong, Samuel tells them not to fear but to follow YHWH with all their heart.

1Samuel Chapter 13

1Samuel Chapter 13

Samuel rebukes Saul

1Samuel 13:1

Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,
It appears that Saul started messing up in his second year as king.

1Samuel 13:8-10

8And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
9And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.
10And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.

Saul and his army were waiting for Samuel to arrive to offer a sacrifice before going to war. Samuel had not yet come, and the soldiers were preparing to flee rather than fight the Philistines. Growing impatient, Saul chose to offer a sacrifice on his own. Saul did what he thought was right rather than what YHWH had instructed him to do.

1Samuel 13:13

13And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
Saul did not wait for Samuel to perform the rituals but decided to do them himself.

1Samuel 13:14

14But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.(KJV)

YHWH rejects Saul and selects David
I think Samuel is talking about David

1Samuel Chapter 14

1Samuel Chapter 14

Jonathan and the Philistines
The philistines flee
Jonathan breaks Saul's oath
Saul's family
I think there is a deep significance to this chapter that I am not understanding. I can see a bunch of events that are either good or bad but the overriding lesson is not clear. Is YHWH showing what happens when the king and the people do what they think is right?

1Samuel 14:32

32And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.

The people ate blood!

1Samuel 14:35

35And Saul built an altar unto the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.

Saul built an altar. I do not know if this is what YHWH wants him to do. I do not know if no priests are supposed to build altars to YHWH.

1Samuel 14:37-43

37And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.

Sual sought and answer from Elohim buy YHWH did not answer him!
Not a good sign!

38And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.

Sual called everyone together to and said he was going to find out who committed the sin.

39For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.

Saul told the people that even if it was his son Jonathan, he would execute right ruling. But the people were still afraid to tell him the truth.

40Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.

Saul put the people on one side and him and his son on the other and the people agreed.

41Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.

When lots were cast (asking for YHWH to decide), Saul and Jonathan were picked and the people escaped the guilt of sin.

42And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

When lots were cast again, Jonathan was picked.

43Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.

Saul asked Jonathan directly and Jonathan finally admitted to what he had done wrong.

1Samuel Chapter 15

1Samuel Chapter 15

Saul rejected as king

1Samuel 15:1

1Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD.

Samuel was the one that annointed Saul as king over YHWH's people.

1Samuel 15:11

11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.

YHWH told Samuel that he was upset that Saul had disobeyed him.

1Samuel 15:15

15And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

Saul not only disobeyed YHWH but claimed he was going to offer the animals YHWH told him to destroy as a sacrifice up to YHWH!

1Samuel 15:19-23

19Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD?

20And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

21But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.

22And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

23For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

To hear and obey is more pleasing to YHWH than sacrifices.

1Samuel 15:28

28And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.

YHWH takes the kingdom of Israel away from Saul.

1Samuel Chapter 16

1Samuel Chapter 16

David chosen to be king

1Samuel 16:9

9Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
According to 1Chronicles 2:13-15, Jesse had seven sons. Their names were:
  1. Eliab
  2. Abinadab
  3. Shimma
  4. Nethaneel
  5. Raddai
  6. Ozem
  7. David
It appears that Jesse's third son's name was mistranslated as either Shimma or Shammah.

1Samuel 16:10

10Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.
According to 1Chronicles 2:13-15, Jesse had seven sons. The seventh son was David. If this is true, how could Jesse have had his seven sons pass before Samuel without including David?

1Samuel 16:13

13Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
Samuel annoints David.

1Samuel Chapter 17

1Samuel Chapter 17

David and Goliath

1Samuel 17:8,16

'8And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.'(KJV)

'16And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.'(KJV)

Verse 8 together with verse 16 show that the Israelites maintained their battle lines for 40 days which disputes the claim by lunar sabbatarians that the Hebrews didn't fight on the Sabbath.

1Samuel 17:12

12Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.(KJV)

According to 1Chronicles 2:13-15, Jesse had seven sons and his seventh son was David.

1Samuel Chapter 18

1Samuel Chapter 18

David and Jonathan
Saul's hatred of David

1Samuel 18:17

17And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD's battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.

Saul offered David Merab, his daughter, as a way to get David to become a soldier in his army. Saul figured this would put David in harms way and David would most likely be killed fighting against the Philistines.

1Samuel 18:18

18And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?

David expressed to Saul that he did not feel worthy to be the son in law to a king. (Humility) Or perhaps it was because David knew he didn't have a dowry to offer.

1Samuel 18:19

19But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.

Saul renegued on his promise to give his daugher Merab to David. Instead, he gave her to Adriel the Meholathite. The meaning of the word Meholathite is unclear, it could be a place in Palestine.

1Samuel 18:20-21

20And Michal Saul's daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.
21And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain.

Saul had a second daughter that liked David and this pleased Saul. Saul planned to use his second daughter, Michal, as bait to get David into battle against the Philistines.

1Samuel 18:22-25

22And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king's son in law.
23And Saul's servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king's son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?
24And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.
25And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

Saul had a secret conversation with David using his servants as proxies. He offered David his daughter Michal and once again, David expressed his feeling of unworthiness. Saul let it be known that he would not require a dowry for his daughter but rather the foreskins of 100 Philistines. Saul figured David would be killed trying to accomplish the task.

1Samuel 18:26-29

26And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son in law: and the days were not expired.
27Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.
28And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal Saul's daughter loved him.
29And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David's enemy continually.

David was pleased with the deal Saul offered and killed twice as many Philistines as requested. Saul saw that his daughter loved David and that YHWH was with David and this made him even more afraid of David.

1Samuel Chapter 19

1Samuel Chapter 19

Saul tries to kill David

1Samuel 19:11-17

11Saul also sent messengers unto David's house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning: and Michal David's wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to night, to morrow thou shalt be slain.
12So Michal let David down through a window: and he went, and fled, and escaped.
13And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goats' hair for his bolster, and covered it with a cloth.
14And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, He is sick.
15And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may slay him.
16And when the messengers were come in, behold, there was an image in the bed, with a pillow of goats' hair for his bolster.
17And Saul said unto Michal, Why hast thou deceived me so, and sent away mine enemy, that he is escaped? And Michal answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; why should I kill thee?

Michal warned David about the danger to his life and helped him escape. She tricked Saul's messengers into thinking David was sick in bed, probably to buy time for David to get far away and when her father confronted her, she claimed that the reason she deceived him was because David threatened to kill her.

1Samuel Chapter 20

1Samuel Chapter 20

Jonathan helps David

1Samuel 20:5

'5And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even.'(KJV)

Translation Difference

"And Dawid said to Yehonathan, "See, tomorrow is the New Moon, and I ought to sit with the sovereign to eat. But let me go, and I shall hide in the field until the third day at evening."" (The ISR Scriptures)

"And Dawid said to Yonathan, See, tomorrow is the Rosh Chodesh, and I should be sitting with the melech to eat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field until the third day at evening." (The Restoration Scriptures)

"So David said to Jonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the Chodesh, and I ought to sit down to eat with the king. But let me go, that I may hide myself in the field until the third evening." (Interlinear 1st Samuel)

New moon. This chapter contains clues as to the Biblical month.

"If Israelite society at the time of King Saul, when the prophet Samuel was still alive, was using a calculation to determine the start of the next month, there would have been no point in having two successive days of festive meals associated with the new moon, which shows an uncertainty of which day among two successive days that would start the month. Thus no calculated calendar could have been used at this time of Israel's history. Ancient Israel did not employ predictive astronomy for their calendar."

Treatise on the Biblical Calendar, second edition (abbreviated TBC2) by Herb Solinsky pg 110b

1Samuel 20:6

6If thy father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem; his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.

I wonder if this sacrifice was specific to David's family or if this is a reference to one of YHWH's moedim?

1Samuel 20:24

24So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat meat.

King Saul was preparing himself for the beginning of the month. Since it took more than one day, this verse lends credence to the idea that the Hebrews waited for the new moon sliver.

1Samuel 20:27

27And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David's place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to day?

If this was the second day of the month, had the new moon sliver already been seen or was the month already set and the new moon feast always two days?

1Samuel Chapter 21

The Book of 1Samuel Chapter 21

David visits Ahimelech

1Samuel 21:3-6

3Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present.
4And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.
5And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.
6So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the shewbread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

The bread mentioned was the shewbread from the priests. However, it was the day old shew bread that the priests had just replaced with fresh bread. The priests said they could only give it to David and his men if they had not been with a woman. David confirmed that he and his men had not been with a woman for about 3 days so the priests gave them the bread to eat. This brings up two (2) questions:

  • Does a man become unclean when he has been with a woman?
  • Can the priests give some of their alloted portion to the hungry AFTER it has served its purpose in the temple?

1Samuel 21:12

12And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

I think David went to Achish, the king of Gath seeking asylum. He knew that the king did not like Saul. However, the king's servants reminded him that while Saul had killed thousands, David had killed 10 thousands and I think this is what caused David to be afraid of king Achish.

1Samuel Chapter 22

1Samuel Chapter 22

David's flight continues
Saul has Ahimelech killed

1Samuel 22:18

18And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod.

Doeg the Edomite killed 85 priests. Is 85 the number of priests that perform the service to YHWH?

1Samuel Chapter 23

1Samuel Chapter 24

1Samuel Chapter 24

Saul persues David
David spares Saul

1Samuel 24:1-13

When King Shaul was delivered into David's hand in the cave, David would not strike Shaul down, for Shaul was YHWH's anointed leader.

1Samuel Chapter 25

1Samuel Chapter 25

David, Nabal and Abigail

1Samuel 25:25

25Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send.

The name 'Nabal' in Hebrew translates to dolt. (H5037)

1Samuel 25:42

42And Abigail hasted, and arose and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.

I wonder if this is related to the 5 wise and 5 foolish virgins in the Brit Chadasha? Matthew 25:1-2?

1Samuel Chapter 26

1Samuel Chapter 26

David spares Saul again

1Samuel 26:11

11The LORD forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the LORD's anointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now the spear that is at his bolster, and the cruse of water, and let us go.

David would not strike Shaul down, for Shaul was YHWH's anointed.
