The Book of 1 Thessalonians

1 Thessalonians 2:14-16

These verses are considered anti-semetic by some.

1 Thessalonians 4:2

'2For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.'  ((KJV))

No, I am not exactly sure what is being referred to here
I need to find out what these commandments are.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

'13But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.'  ((KJV))

'14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.'  ((KJV))

These verses support the belief that people who have died since Jesus' resurrection are still asleep until the second coming.
They do not support the commonly held belief in spirits that exist today.

1 Thessalonians 4:16

'For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:' (KJV)

According to the author, Christ's return will not be a quiet event.

I need to research this.

My understanding, according to Revelations Chapter ?, is that Christ will come again, reign on earth for 1,000 years, Satan will finally be defeated and THEN the dead will rise and the book of life will be opened.

AFTER the messiah returns, 'we will be caught up together with them in the clouds'.  Is this the Rapture?  If so, it is still AFTER the return of the Messiah and therefore (according to Matthew 24:29-31, Mark 13:24-27, Luke 21:25-28) AFTER the tribulation.

What is meant by the phrase, "the dead in Christ"?  Is this the wicked or the righteous?

1 Thessalonians 4:17

'17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.' (KJV)

Who are 'them in the clouds'?
If everyone sleeps until the resurrection, who are all the heavenly host?

1 Thessalonians 5:2

"2For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night." (KJV)

The day of the LORD
The day of YHWH

1 Thessalonians 5:20

"20Despise not prophesyings." (KJV)

Interesting that the ISR Scriptures does not use a period at the end of this verse.

1 Thessalonians 5:21

'Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.' (KJV)

Translation Difference

'prove them all. Hold fast what is good.' (The ISR Scriptures)

'Test them all; hold fast to what is tov.' (The ISR Scriptures)

'Prove all things, hold fast that which is good.' (Hebraic Roots Bible)

'But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good;'  (Interlinear 1 Thessalonians)

tov - (good)

GENERAL NOTES ON THE BOOK OF 1 THESSALONIANS:

The epistle to the Thessalonians is certainly one of the most ancient Christian documents in existence. It is typically dated c. 50/51 CE.

It is universally assented to be an authentic letter of Paul.

Thessalonica was the capital of the province of Macedonia and a large seaport. The letter to the Thessalonians is thought to have been written by Paul from Corinth a few months after founding a congregation there.

Paul had clearly taught that Jesus would be coming within the lifetimes of those alive at the time. This teaching led to concerns in the Thessalonian church over the fate of those who had died before the coming of the Lord. Would they share in the joy of the parousia? Paul writes to assure the Thessalonians that those who had fallen asleep in Christ would also profit from the coming of the Lord. Paul instructs them that the dead would come to life first and that they would join the living with the Lord when he comes.
