2Samuel Chapter 2

David annointed king

2Samuel 2:1

'1And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.'(KJV)

YHWH tells David to travel to Hebron.
David travels to the southern half of Israel (the house of Judah) in Hebron, south of Jeruesalem.

2Samuel 2:8

'8But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;'(KJV)

Ishbosheth (Saul's surviving son) becomes King over the Northern tribes of Israel. Abner (the military commander) sets up Ishbosheth as a puppet King while the power remains with Abner.

2Samuel 2:10

'10Ishbosheth Saul's son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.'(KJV)

Ishbosheth is made King over the northern tribes of Israel.

2Samuel 2:23

'23Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.'(KJV)

Abner kills Asahel.

2Samuel Chapter 3

Israel and Judah war

2Samuel 3:1

'1Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker.'(KJV)

War between the house of Saul and the house of David.

2Samuel 3:10

10To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.(KJV)

It appears that the Hebrews have divided into two factions at this point, Israel and Judah.

2Samuel 3:18

18Now then do it: for the LORD hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.(KJV)

When did YHWH say this and who did HE say it to?

2Samuel 3:27

27And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.(KJV)

Joab kills Abner to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel.

2Samuel 3:35

35And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down.(KJV)

Why was the setting of the sun used as a marker? I think this ties in with when does the day begin and end and what exactly is a 'day'. Is it the period of time when the sun light is shining on the earth or is it a 24 hour period of time?

2Samuel Chapter 4

Abner visits David
Joab kills Abner

2Samuel 4:4

4And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.(KJV)

Mephibosheth is a Hebrew word meaning - dispeller of shame (ie of Baal)

6And they came thither into the midst of the house, as though they would have fetched wheat; and they smote him under the fifth rib: and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped. (KJV)

7For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and gat them away through the plain all night.(KJV)

Rechab and Baanah kill and behead Ishbosheth.

2Samuel Chapter 5

David made king of Israel
Philistines defeated

2Samuel 5:3

"3So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel."(KJV)

David is annointed

2Samuel 5:5

"5In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah."(KJV)

David unites BOTH houses of Israel. The Northern tribes realized they had to join the house of Judah as Judah had the annointed king.
David rules for forty (40) years.
In Hebron he reigned over Judah six years and six months (6 1/2 years).
In Jerusalem he reigned over Israel and Judah for thirty-three (33) years.

David defeats the Philistines in the valley of Rephaim at Baalperazim with YHWH's blessing.
The Philistines come against David again and David defeats them with YAH's help.

2Samuel Chapter 6

The ark brought to Jerusalem

2Samuel Chapter 6

2Samuel 6:2-10

David brings the ark of YHWH out of the house of Abinadad in Gibeah to Nachon's thresing floor.
Uzzah is killed after touching the arc.
David is afraid of YHWH and brings the arc to the house of Obededom the Gittite.

2Samuel 6:7

7And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.

A person's motives do not appear to make much difference when they break one on YHWH's ordinances.

2Samuel 6:12-23

David brings the ark of YHWH out of the Obededom the Gittite and into the city of David.
Michal, Saul's daughter sees David dancing in a linen ephod and disapproves.
David and Michal have and argument and David refuses to have intimate relations with her until her death.

2Samuel Chapter 7

Nathan's prophecy
David's prayer
Important reference chapter.

2Samuel 7:2-13

David decides to build a house for YHWH.  YHWH tells David not to build HIM a house but rather that David's son Solomon will build HIM a house.

2Samuel 7:10

10Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime,(KJV)

YHWH mentions the children of wickedness. ???
Who are the children of wickedness? Does haSatan have offspring?

2Samuel 7:13

13He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.(KJV)

2Samuel 7:14-15

14I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:

15But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.(KJV)

Interesting to note that YHWH says HE will not take HIS mercy from Solomon as HE did with King Saul. It seems that Solomon will not sin as bad as King Saul did.

2Samuel Chapter 8

David's military victories

2Samuel 8:4

4And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: and David houghed all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for an hundred chariots.

It appears that the word hough, in this context, does not mean hamstrung but rather it means gelded.

2Samuel Chapter 13

Amnon defiles Tamar
Absalom kills Amnon

2Samuel 13:3

3But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David's brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man.(KJV)

In 1Samuel 16:9 Shimeah is called Shammah and in 1Chronicles 2:13 he is called Shimma.

Since YHWH doesn't make mistakes, the Scriptures cannot be the 'unerring word of Lord God Almighty' as is claimed by the Christian church.

2Samuel Chapter 14

Absalom's return

2Samuel 14:14

14For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any person: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.

YHWH does not respect any person but HE does provide us a means to get back to HIS salvation.

2Samuel Chapter 17

2Samuel Chapter 18

Absalom killed by Joab
I am finding some interesting stuff in this chapter. Kind David is dealing with the sin and death of his son Absalom.

2Samuel 18:1-4

Scripture claims King David's was going to lead them into battle but the people thought he was too valuable to risk. The people have elevated this status of the king because of what he symbolizes to them. It seems they are protecting their symbol. If more kings went into battle, we would have far less wars. Pit their symbol against your symbol.

2Samuel 18:9

9And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.(KJV)

An interesting fate. I wonder if their is any symbology in this situation.

2Samuel 18:10-13

A witness, who saw Absalom hanging in a tree, reported to Joab what he had seen. Joab asked the witness why he had not killed Absalom as he would have rewarded him. The witness reminded Joab that King David had charged Joab, Abishai, and Ittai that no one should touch Absalom. The witness knew that king David would find out and probably would have sent Joab himself to kill the him.

2Samuel 18:18

18Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom's place.(KJV)

King David's son Absalom erected a pillar in his own name.

2Samuel Chapter 19

David mourns Absalom
David's return to Jerusalem

2Samuel 19:40-43

It appears that this is the beginning of the separation of Israel and Judah. It sounds like the men of Israel felt that since they were 10 of the tribes and Judah was only 2 of the tribes, they should have preferrence.

2Samuel Chapter 20

Sheba leads Israel to revolt

2Samuel Chapter 20

2Samuel Chapter 21

David repays the Gibeonites

YHWH brings a 3 year famine on the land because Saul broke the oath that Joshua made with the Gibeonites in Joshua 9:14-15

King David tries to make atonement for Saul. The Gibeonites wanted none of Saul's money or property and they did not want to punish the people of Israel. The Gibionites wanted seven (7) of Saul's sons that they were going to hang.

David gives them seven (7) sons of Saul.
David brings the bones back and buries them
YHWH turns away HIS wrath from the land.

2Samuel 21:1

'1Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.'(KJV)

Saul broke a pact made with the Gibonites.

2Samuel 21:2

2And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)(KJV)

Interesting that Saul was seeking to appease the children of Israel and Judah. Is this referring to the Northern and Southern tribes? Judah is a child of Israel so a genetic lineage reference cannot be appropriate. At this point in history, why is Judah being seperated from Israel?

2Samuel 21:3-6

3Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the LORD?(KJV)

King David tries to atone for Saul's transgression against the Gibeonites who had made a pact with Joshua.

2Samuel 21:7-9

7But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD's oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

8But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite:(KJV)

King David gives seven (7) sons of Saul to the Gibeonites who hang them.

2Samuel 21:10-14

14And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.(KJV)

After King David made atonement for Saul, YHWH stopped the drought.

2Samuel 21:16

16And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.(KJV)

Who is the giant being referred to in this verse? It sounds like his son, this man Ishbibenob, is also a giant.

2Samuel 21:18-20

18And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant.(KJV)

Who is the giant being referred to in this verse? It sounds like his son, this man Saph, is also a giant.

19And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.(KJV)

Goliath's brother was also a giant.

20And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.(KJV)

This giant had 6 fingers and 6 toes on his hands and feet.

2Samuel 21:22

22These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.(KJV)

Four of the giant's sons were killed.

2Samuel Chapter 23

2Samuel Chapter 24

A census of Israel and Judah
David builds and altar.
I am not sure what David did to anger YHWH but even after confessing, YHWH extracted a punishment. HE allowed David to pick the punishment from one of three options.

2Samuel 24:9

9And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

1,300,000 men.
There seems to be a seperation of the men of Israel and the men of Judah. They aren't called the house of Israel and the house of Judah yet but there does seem to be a separation here. I do not recall exactly when this started but it does seem to begin in the book of Samuel.

2Samuel 24:10

10And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

I do not understand what David has done wrong here.

2Samuel 24:12

12Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

YHWH tells the Prophet Gad to have David choose one of three possible punishments for his sin.

2Samuel 24:24

24And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

In 1Chronicles 21:25 it is written that David gave Oman 600 shekels of gold?
