Joshua Chapter 1

Joshua 1:2

"2Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel."(KJV)

YHWH speaks to Joshua/Yahusha after Moses/Mosheh's death and instructs him to cross the river Jordon with all the people.

Joshua 1:3

"3Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses."(KJV)

Translation Difference

'"Every place on which the sole of your foot treads I have given you, as I spoke to Mosheh.' (The ISR Scriptures)

'Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given to you, as I said to Moshe.' (The Restoration Scriptures)

'Every place on which the sole of your foot shall tread, I have given it to you, as I spoke to Moses.' (Hebraic Roots Bible)

'Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moshe.'  (Interlinear Joshua)

This verse seems to be indicating the land their feet tread upon once they cross the river Jordon and not all the land their feet have trod upon since leaving Egypt.

Joshua 1:4

"4From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast."(KJV)

The borders of the promised land are stated.

Joshua 1:5

"5There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee."(KJV)

This verse seems to be referring to the time period of Joshua/Yahusha's life and not for all time or forever.

Joshua 1:8

"This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success."(KJV)

Translation Difference

'"Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you guard to do according to all that is written in it.  For then you shall make your wayprosperous, and act wisely.' (The ISR Scriptures)

'This scroll of the Torah shall not depart out of your mouth; but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may shomer to do according to all that is written in it: for then you shall make your derech prosperous, and then you shall have tov success.' (The Restoration Scriptures)

Joshua 1:11

"11Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it."(KJV)

Why three (3) days?

Joshua 1:12-15

Joshua/Yahusha tells the Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh that they may leave their wives, children and possesions where they are but they must also cross the river Jordon and fight to secure the land for their brothers.

Joshua Chapter 2

Joshua Chapter 2

Rahab helps the spies

Joshua 2:1-9

Joshua/Yahusha sends two spies out to scout out the land including Jericho.

The spies lodge at the house of a harlot named Rahab.

The king of Jericho hears about the spies.

Rahab hides the spies from the king of Jericho.

Joshua 2:10

Rahab tells the spies how the land has heard what YHWH did at the Red Sea and what the children of Israel had done to the Amorites and the two kings Sihon and Og and that they were afraid of the children of Israel.

Joshua 2:10

Rahab makes the spies swear an oath to protect her when the children of Israel come to take the city.

Joshua 2:14

14And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

Joshua honors this oath in Joshua 6:22-25

Joshua 2:16

"16And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way."(KJV)

They hid for three (3) days.

Joshua 2:23-24

The two spies return to Joshua/Yahusha and give a positive report.

Joshua Chapter 3

Joshua Chapter 3

Israel crosses the Jordan

Joshua 3:1

"1And Joshua rose early in the morning; and they removed from Shittim, and came to Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over."(KJV)

Joshua/Yahusha leaves Shittim and comes to the river Jordan.

Joshua 3:2

"2And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the host;"(KJV)

Three (3) days.

Joshua 3:5

"5And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the LORD will do wonders among you."(KJV)

The people santified themselves first.

Joshua 3:7

"7And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee."(KJV)

YHWH tells Joshua/Yahusha that HE will be with him like HE was with Moses.

Joshua 3:10

"10And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites."(KJV)

Seven (7) Canaanite tribes are listed.

Joshua 3:11

"11Behold, the ark of the covenant of the LORD of all the earth passeth over before you into Jordan."(KJV)

'The ark of the covenant of the God of all the earth passes over before you into Jordan.'
Apparently, a very significant event.
A lot of potential symbolizism in this verse and/or event.

Joshua 3:12-17

YHWH parts the river Jordan as soon as the priests carrying the ark of the covenant enter the water.
The people pass over on dry land.

Joshua Chapter 4

Joshua 4:18

The crossing of the river Jordan just like the crossing of the Red Sea.

Joshua Chapter 5

Joshua 5:2-8

YHWH instructs Joshua/Yahusha to circumcise the children of Israel/Yisra'ĕl a second time because the children born during the journey in the wilderness had not been circumsised.

Joshua 5:9

YHWH told Joshua/Yahusha that he had rolled away the reproach of Egypt from them at Gilgal.

Joshua 5:10

"10And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho."(KJV)

The children of Israel/Yisra'ĕl kept the passover at Gilgal in the plains of Jericho.

They observed passover on the fourteenth (14th) day at evening.

Joshua 5:12

The manna stopped the day after passover.

Joshua 5:13-15

Joshua/Yahusha is visited by an angel.

Joshua 5:15

"15And the captain of the LORD's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so."(KJV)

I wonder why you have to take your shoes off on sacred ground?
The priests also go into the holy place (temple) barefoot.
Is this a sandal covenant?

Joshua Chapter 6

The book of Joshua Chapter 6

The taking and destruction of Jericho.
The concept of 'the ban' is detailed in this chapter. The Christian church tends to use the word, 'accursed' or the term 'devoted to destruction' for the Hebrew word, 'Charam'.
Devoted to Destruction (WWW.CRIVOICE.ORG) - (PDF COPY)

I noticed that Israel was told to keep the gold, silver, and bronze here at Jerico but at a different city in Joshua Chapter 9, Joshua is specifically told NOT to take the gold and silver, but rather to burn it and leave it. I suspect this depends on how the gold and silver were used. In that day, these metals would have been used either for money (coins) and/or religious artifacts. Since YHWH cannot accept that which is pagan or profane, the satanic symbology would have to be destroyed (erased). I believe the burning and abandonment of the gold, silver, and bronze was a form of cleansing ritual.

Burning these metals does not destroy them but rather destroys any pagan symbology associated with them, and returns these metals to their natural state, the shape of the earth around them.

By leaving the valuable metals behind, the Hebrews were destroying any memory of how these metals were once used. A stranger mining the area in the future would have no idea of how these metals were used in the past and would be free to take them.

This idea could also be used to explain the action taken against the other cities detailed in Joshua Chapter 9. Perhaps those cities had no symbology on their coins or religous artifacts, if they even had them at all.

Joshua 6:17-18

17And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the LORD: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

18And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.(KJV)

Translation Difference

17 'And the city shall be put under the ban, it and all that is in it belongs to YHWH. Only Rahab the whore is to live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.(The ISR Scriptures)

18 “And you, by all means guard yourselves from that which is under the ban, lest you come under the ban when you take of that which is under the ban, and make the camp of Yisra'el a curse, and shall trouble it.'(The ISR Scriptures)

Joshua 6:19

19But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.(KJV)

YHWH specifically says it is okay to take the precious metals. Contrast this with Deuteronomy 7:25.

Joshua 6:21

21And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.(KJV)

Translation Difference

21And they put under the ban all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword.(The ISR Scriptures)

Joshua 6:26

26And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.(KJV)<

Joshua curses Jericho.

Joshua Chapter 7

Joshua 7:11

"Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff."(KJV)

Translation Difference

'"Yisra'ĕl has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. And they have even taken some of that which is under the ban, and have both stolen and deceived, and also put it among their own goods.' (The ISR Scriptures)

'Yisrael has sinned, and they have also transgressed My brit, which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the cursed things, and have also stolen, and deceived also, and they have put it even among their own belongings.' (The Restoration Scriptures)

Joshua Chapter 8

Joshua Chapter 8

An altar built in mount Ebal

Joshua 8:29

29And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.(KJV)

(KJV)

Why the commandment to not let a body hang in a tree after sunset?

Joshua Chapter 9

Joshua Chapter 9

The Gibeonites'deception.
This is a significant event.
Joshua is going make a pact with the Gibeonites that will come up again in the future.

I wonder what would have happened to the Gibeonites if they had been honest about who they were?
YHWH had already told Joshua to destroy all the inhabitants of the land and to not even take their gold and silver but rather to burn it.

Joshua 9:3-4

3And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,(KJV)

4They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;(KJV)

Gibeon is going to make pact with Israel that will be brought up again when Saul tries to kill them in the future. 2 Samuel 21:1-2

According to Joshua 10:2 '...Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.', so this was a significant event.

Joshua 9:14

14And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.(KJV)

YHWH was very upset that Joshua made a major decision without counsulting with HIM first. This is a re-occuring sequence in Scripture. Moses was kept from entering the promised land because he did not give praise to YHWH for bringing the water out of the rock.

Joshua Chapter 10

Joshua Chapter 10

The sun stands still
Conquest of the south

Joshua 10:6-8

6And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.(KJV)

7So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.(KJV)

8And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.(KJV)

The Gibeonites were calling on Joshua to honor the pact he made with them.
Joshua defended the Gibeonites against their enemies.
YHWH told Joshua the he would defeat the enemies of the Gibeonites before Joshua went into battle.
I find this interesting as the Gibeonites were originally slated to be destroyed and they deceived Joshua into making a pact with them in the first place. The Gibeonites were spared destruction because of the pact and were made subjects of the Israelites (hewers of wood and carriers of water). I have wondered what if the Gibeonites and not deceived Joshua, told the truth, and begged to be spared? Would YHWH have repealed HIS judgment? Now, in these verses, YHWH is showing support for Joshua defending the people HE originally slated for destruction.

Joshua 10:12-14

"12Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon."(KJV)

"13And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day."(KJV)

14And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.(KJV)

YHWH stops the sun and moon for Joshua/Yahusha.
Right up there with the parting of the Red Sea.
This is most definitely a significant event!
Reference is made to the book of Jasher.

Joshua 10:26-27

"26And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening."(KJV)

"27And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave's mouth, which remain until this very day."(KJV)

Sunset is evening.

Joshua 10:39

39And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.(KJV)

I wonder why nations or people are referred to in the feminine gender? This is the only place in this chapter where a feminine pronoun is attached to a king or kingdom. I have also noticed where religions are also referred to in the feminine tense in prophesy.

Joshua Chapter 11

Joshua Chapter 11

Conquest of the north.

Joshua 11:1-5

Jabin/Yabin king of Hazor, Jobab/Yobab king of Madon, the king of Shimron, the king of Achshaph/Akshaph, the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth/Kinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west, and to the Canaanite/Kena'anite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite/Yebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite/Hiwwite under Hermon in the land of Mizpah/Mizpeh/Mitspah came together with horses and chariots at the waters of Merom/Mĕrom to fight against Israel/Yisra'ĕl.

Joshua 11:6

"6And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire."(KJV)

YHWH tells Joshua/Yahusha not to be afraid as tomorrow HE was going to deliver them up to be slain by Israel/Yisra'ĕl.

Translation Difference

'And YHWH said to Yehoshua, "Do not be afraid of their presence, for tomorrow about this time I am giving all of them over to Yisra'ĕl, slain. Hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire."' (The ISR Scriptures)

It appears that the word hough, in this context, does not mean hamstrung but rather it means gelded.

Joshua 11:8

Israel/Yisra'ĕl meets them in battle, chases them to Sidon/Zidon/Tsidon, Misrephothmaim/Mitspeh Mayim and to the valley of Mizpah/Mizpeh/Mitspah and eastward and kills them all leaving none remaining.

Joshua 11:9

"9And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him: he houghed their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire."(KJV)

Translation Difference

'And Yehoshua did to them as YHWH said to him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.' (The ISR Scriptures)

It appears that the word hough, in this context, does not mean hamstrung but rather it means gelded.

Joshua 11:10

10And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.(KJV)

Joshua/Yahusha takes Hazor/Hatsor and kills the king because he used to be the king of all those kingdoms.

Joshua 11:11

Joshua/Yahusha burns Hazor/Hatsor.

Joshua 11:13

"13But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn."(KJV)

Translation Difference

'However, Yisra'ĕl did not burn any cities that stood on their mounds, but Yehoshua burned only Hatsor.' (The ISR Scriptures)

'But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Yisrael burned none of them, except Chatzor only; that did Yahoshua burn.' (The Restoration Scriptures)

'But as for all the cities which stood by their mounds, Israel did not burn them; but Joshua only burned Hazor.' (Hebraic Roots Bible)

'However, Yisrael did not burn any cities that stood on their mounds, except Hazor alone, which Yahushua burned.'  (Interlinear Joshua)

Joshua 11:19

The Hivite/Hiwwite and the inhabitants of Gibeon/Gib'on were the only ones to make peace with Israel/Yisra'ĕl.

Joshua 11:20

YHWH had hardened the hearts of all but the Hivite/Hiwwite and the inhabitants of Gibeon/Gib'on so all the others would be destroyed.

Joshua 11:21

Joshua/Yahusha went to battle against the Anakims/Anaqim and drove them from the mountains, from Hebron/Hebron, from Debir/Debir, from Anab/Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel.

The Anakim were giants. I think these people were the main targets of YHWH's wrath since HE promised Abraham the land.

Joshua 11:22

22There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained.(KJV)

The Anakims were descendants of Anak: a race of giants
There were still Anakims/Anaqim left in Gaza/Azzah, Gath and Ashdod/Ashdod. Does this verse and the next indicate that Gaza/Azzah, Gath and Ashdod/Ashdod are NOT part of the land of the children of Israel?

Joshua 11:23

After Joshua took the whole land, he gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to the divisions by their tribes.

Joshua Chapter 12

Joshua 12:4

4And the coast of Og king of Bashan, which was of the remnant of the giants, that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,

Joshua Chapter 14

Land west of the Jordan

Joshua 14:1-5

Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed the land east of the Jordan river to 9 1/2 of the tribes.

Joshua 14:6-15

Caleb asks for and receives the mountain at Gilgal for an inheritance.  The places was called Kirjatharba/Kirjath-Arba/Kirjath-ha-ArbaQiryath Arba before but was renamed to Hebron/Hebron when it was given to Caleb.

Joshua 14:12

12Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.(KJV)

Mentions the Anakims.

Joshua 14:15

15And the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.(KJV)

Mentions the Anakims.

Joshua Chapter 15

Joshua 15

The borders of Judah
Judah/Yahudah's land inheritance is detailed in this chapter. I find it interesting to note that you do not hear people talking about this chapter very often.

Joshua 15:1

'1This then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families; even to the border of Edom the wilderness of Zin southward was the uttermost part of the south coast.'(KJV)

'The wilderness of Zin is just below the southernmost shore of, what today is called, the Dead Sea.'

Joshua 15:3

'3And it went out to the south side to Maalehacrabbim, and passed along to Zin, and ascended up on the south side unto Kadeshbarnea, and passed along to Hezron, and went up to Adar, and fetched a compass to Karkaa:'(KJV)

'Depending on the map, Kadeshbarnea is well below (south of) the southernmost shore of, what today is called, the Dead Sea.'

Joshua 15:8

8And the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom unto the south side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem: and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lieth before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward:(KJV)

Speaks about 'the Jebusite' being Jerualem. Talks about the valley of the giants.

Joshua 15:13

13And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron.

I think the city of Hebron was a main city of the Anakim.

Joshua 15:14

14And Caleb drove thence the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.

The Anakim

Joshua 15:63

Speaks about the Jebusites being the inhabitants of Jerusalem and how Judah could not drive them out.  This verse also speaks of them living there "unto this day".

Joshua Chapter 16

Joshua 16

Speaks about the apportioning of land to the children of Joseph, Manasseh/Menashsheh and Ephraim/Ephrayim.

Joshua 16:10

They did NOT drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer: but the Canaanites lived among the Ephraimites and 'serve under tribute'.

Does this mean they were slaves or servants and why did this happen? Interesting that they dwelt with Ephraim. I think the tribe of Ephraim is a key for those who are not of the tribe of Israel to enter Jerusalem.

Joshua Chapter 17

Joshua Chapter 17

The borders of Ephraim and Manasseh/Menashsheh
Assigning the inherited land

Joshua 17:1-3

The lineage of Manasseh/Menashsheh is detailed.

Joshua 17:3-11

The land inheritance of Manasseh/Menashsheh and Ephraim/Ephrayim is detailed. Also included is a case of a man who had no sons but only daughters and how they were given an inheritance according to the laws of Moses.

Joshua 17:12-13

The land where the Canaanite/Kena'anite were NOT driven out is detailed.

Joshua 17:14-17

There was a dispute among the children of Joseph regarding their inheritance.  I think Ephraim/Ephrayim was the one complaining but the Scriptures are a little vague on this.

Joshua 17:18

Joshua says that the children of Joseph will drive out the Canaanite/Kena'anite from their land.

Joshua Chapter 18

Joshua 18

The land of Benjamin
The children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of the congregation there.
Seven tribes remained which had not yet received their inheritance.
Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before YHWH and divided the land unto the children of Israel according to their divisions.

Joshua 18:16

16And the border came down to the end of the mountain that lieth before the valley of the son of Hinnom, and which is in the valley of the giants on the north, and descended to the valley of Hinnom, to the side of Jebusi on the south, and descended to Enrogel,

valley of the giants

Joshua Chapter 19

Joshua 19

This chapter is the end of the dividing of the land according to the tribal inheritances.

Joshua, son of Nun, is given a land inheritance.

Joshua, son of Nun, asks for and is given Timnathserah in mount Ephraim.

Joshua 19:10

10And the third lot came up for the children of Zebulun according to their families: and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid:

11And their border went up toward the sea, and Maralah, and reached to Dabbasheth, and reached to the river that is before Jokneam;

This is a fulfillment of a prophecy made by Jocob in Genesis 49:13 that Zebulun 'shall dwell at the haven of the sea'.

Joshua Chapter 22

Eastern tribes return home

Joshua 22:13

13And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,(KJV)

In the book of Numbers chapter 25, Phinehas kills an unnamed man of Israel who went into a tent with a Midianitish woman named Cozbia, by stabbing them both through the belly with a javelin.
Later in the chapter she is named and her father Zur who was an important man from an important Midian family.
Interesting that they don't name the man of Israel.

Joshua Chapter 23

Joshua Chapter 23

Joshua's address to Israel
I noticed how YHWH is still telling HIS people to stay apart from the rest of the world. Modern religions seemed so intent on evangelizing the message they have become ensnared with Pagan and Heathen customs.

Joshua 23:2

2And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and stricken in age:(KJV)

Joshua 23:6

"6Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;"(KJV)

Joshua tells the Hebrew people to follow the written law of Moses.  No mention is made of any oral or spoken law.  According to Jewish tradition, the 'oral law' would have been in existence at this time.

Joshua 23:14-16

14And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.(KJV)

15Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.

16When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.

Joshua reminds the people that YHWH has kept HIS promises and that if the people transgress the covenant of YHWH he will destroy them and they will perish from off the good land.
This prophecy was fulfilled when the Assyrians and Babylonians drove them into exile.

Joshua Chapter 24

Joshua 24:1

Joshua/Yahusha gathers all the tribes of Israel/Yisra'ĕl to Shechem/Shekem.

Joshua 24:2

2And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.

Terah/Terah is identified as the father of Abraham/Abrahim and Nahor/Nachor/Nahor as Abraham/Abrahim's brother.
Abraham/Abrahim's brother father and brother served other gods.
I find it interesting that people still remembered the great flood in Joshua's day.

Joshua 24:4

YHWH gave mount Seir/Sĕ'ir to Esau/Esaw.

Joshua 24:12

YHWH sent hornets ahead of the children of Israel/Yisra'ĕl when they faced the Canaanite tribes.

Joshua 24:14-27

Joshua/Yahusha makes a covenant with the people to obey YHWH.

Joshua 24:14

14Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.

The people still remember the great flood, even after 500 years in Egypt and 40 years in the wilderness.

Joshua 24:25

25So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.
Joshua made a covenant with the people.
What does it mean to 'set a statute and an ordinance'?

Joshua 24:27

27And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.
The tradition of stones, or pillars, or cairns serving as a witness is interesting to me. I wonder if their use is merely symbolic of something eternal or if the earth is more alive than we are aware. YHWH spoke of the earth crying out over spilt blood or attrocities being committed. Mankind was created from the earth (every other creation was spoken into existance).

Joshua 24:28

The people depart from Shechem/Shekem to go to the land of their inheritance.

Joshua 24:29

Joshua/Yahusha dies at 110 years old.

Joshua 24:30

Joshua/Yahusha is buried in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.

Joshua 24:31

Israel/Yisra'ĕl served YHWH all the days of Joshua/Yahusha, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua.

Joshua 24:32

The bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel/Yisra'ĕl brought up out of Egypt, were buried in Shechem/Shekem, in the parcel of ground which Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem/Shekem. for an hundred pieces of silver

Joshua 24:33

Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in a hill that pertained to Phinehas his son, which was given to in mount Ephraim.
