Numbers Chapter 1

Numbers 1:1

1And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of the congregation, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying,(KJV)

1st Day, 2nd Month, 2nd Year

Why was the Torah given in a desert?

"Because a desert is empty.  What this means is to acquire Torah - to receive YAH's wisdom - we must first be willing to open up space inside."

"The Maharal (16th century Prague) explains that the only way to teach anything is to first get the student to ask a question.  Because a question creates a lack and a need - a space that the answer can then come and fill. But without first a question, there is no room for the answer."

Numbers Chapter 2

Numbers 2:1

"Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard, with the ensign of their father's house: far off about the tabernacle of the congregation shall they pitch." (KJV)

NIV Translation Difference

""The children of Yisra'ĕl are to camp, each one by his own banner, beside the sign of his father's house. Let them camp around the Tent of Meeting at a distance."" (The ISR Scriptures)

"Every man of the children of Yisrael shall camp by his own banner, with the sign of their abba's bayit: at a long distance around the Tabernacle of the congregation shall they camp." (The Restoration Scriptures)

"The sons of Yisrael shall camp, each by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers' households; they shall camp around the tent of appointment at a distance." (Interlinear Numbers)

Numbers Chapter 3

Numbers 3

This chapter details the layout of the Levites which camped within the tabernacle (/temple) and their duties/responsibilites.

Numbers 3:12

"And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine;" (KJV)

NIV Translation Difference

""Now look, I Myself have taken the Lĕwites from among the children of Yisra'ĕl instead of every first-born who opens the womb among the children of Yisra'ĕl. And the Lĕwites shall be Mine," (The ISR Scriptures)

"See, I have taken the Lewiym from among the children of Yisrael instead of all the bachor that pehter 446 the womb among the children of Yisrael: therefore the Lewiym shall be Mine;" (The Restoration Scriptures)

Until the transgression of the Golden Calf, the firstborn sons were the ones who were designated to do the holy service in the Mishkan, the Portable Sanctuary, in the Desert.  No one from the Tribe of Levi worshipped the Golden Calf and, therefore, the Almighty replaced the firstborn with the Tribe of Levi to serve in the sanctuary (Numbers 3:11-12).  Levi had three sons: Gershon, Kehath and Merari.  The work of the Sanctuary -- erecting, dismantling, carrying, singing, assisting the Cohanim -- was divided amongst the three families.

Numbers 3:13

"Because all the firstborn are mine; for on the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast: mine shall they be: I am the LORD." (KJV)

NIV Translation Difference

"because all the first-born are Mine. On the day that I struck all the first-born in the land of Mitsrayim, I set apart to Myself all the first-born in Yisra'ĕl, both man and beast. They are Mine, I am YHWH."" (The ISR Scriptures)

"Because all the bachor are Mine; for on the day that I smote all the bachor in the land of Mitzrayim I made all the bachor in Yisrael kadosh to Me, both man and beast: they shall be Mine: I am YHWH." (The Restoration Scriptures)

This is the reason why all the firstborn are YHWH's and why we are supposed to dedicate our firstborn to HIM.

Numbers 3:22

"22Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those that were numbered of them were seven thousand and five hundred." (KJV)

7,500 Gershonites

Numbers 3:23

"23The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behind the tabernacle westward." (KJV)

The Gershonites camped west of the tabernacle(/temple)

Numbers 3:24

"24And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael." (KJV)

Eliasaph is the head of the westward Levitical camp.

Numbers 3:25-26

"25And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation shall be the tabernacle, and the tent, the covering thereof, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation," (KJV)

"26And the hangings of the court, and the curtain for the door of the court, which is by the tabernacle, and by the altar round about, and the cords of it for all the service thereof." (KJV)

The responsibilites of the Gershonites or westward camp.

Numbers 3:28

"28In the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary." (KJV)

8,600 Kohathites

Numbers 3:29

"29The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle southward." (KJV)

The Kohathites camped south of the tabernacle(/temple)

Numbers 3:30

"30And the chief of the house of the father of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel." (KJV)

Elizaphan is the head of the southward Levitical camp.

Numbers 3:31

"31And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the hanging, and all the service thereof." (KJV)

The responsibilites of the Kohathites or southward camp.
The Kohathites (or southward camp) take care of the sanctuary.

Numbers 3:32

"32And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be chief over the chief of the Levites, and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary." (KJV)

Interesting that Eleazar (son of Aaron) is put in charge of the Kohathite camp because they are the ones that take care of the sanctuary.
Aaron and Moses were of the tribe of Kohath.

Numbers 3:34

"34And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand and two hundred." (KJV)

6,200 Merarites

Numbers 3:35

Zuriel is the head of the northward Levitical camp.

Numbers 3:36-37

"36And under the custody and charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, and all the vessels thereof, and all that serveth thereto," (KJV)

"37And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords." (KJV)

The responsibilites of the Merarites or northward camp.

Numbers 3:38

"38But those that encamp before the tabernacle toward the east, even before the tabernacle of the congregation eastward, shall be Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death." (KJV)

The families of Moses and Aaron camped east of the tabernacle/temple.

Numbers 3:39

"39All that were numbered of the Levites, which Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of the LORD, throughout their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty and two thousand." (KJV)

The familes of Moses and Aaron numbered 22,000.

Numbers 3:43

"43And all the firstborn males by the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those that were numbered of them, were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen." (KJV)

Numbers 5:15

15Then shall the man bring his wife unto the priest, and he shall bring her offering for her, the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it is an offering of jealousy, an offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance.(KJV)

offering of jealousy

offering of memorial

Numbers 5:18

18And the priest shall set the woman before the LORD, and uncover the woman's head, and put the offering of memorial in her hands, which is the jealousy offering: and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that causeth the curse:(KJV)

The woman's head was covered.

Numbers 5:23

"And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out with the bitter water:" (KJV)

NIV Translation Difference

'And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and shall wipe them off into the bitter water,' (The ISR Scriptures)

'And the kohen shall write these curses in a scroll, and he shall blot them out with the bitter mayim: 453' (The ISR Scriptures)

453  Yahshua nailed the curse of Yisrael's unfaithfulness to His execution stake, as Yisrael corporately had violated the Torah of a jealous Husband.  In so doing, Yahshua took the book with all Yisrael's violations and canceled the curses that resulted from Yisrael's unfaithfulness that were recorded in the book by the High Priest.  That is referenced clearly in Colossians 2:14.

Numbers 5:29

29This is the law of jealousies, when a wife goeth aside to another instead of her husband, and is defiled;(KJV)

Numbers 9:14

Numbers Chapter 10

The second tables of stone
YHWH's great requirement

Numbers 10:2

"2Make thee two trumpets of silver; of a whole piece shalt thou make them: that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps." (KJV)

The two (2) silver trumpets are to be used for calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps.

Numbers 10:4

"4And if they blow but with one trumpet, then the princes, which are heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves unto thee." (KJV)

When only one (1) silver trumpet is blown, the princes (or heads of the thousands of Israel) shall gather.

Numbers 10:7

"7But when the congregation is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm." (KJV)

What is the difference between blowing the trumpet and sounding an alarm?

Numbers 10:8

8And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an ordinance for ever throughout your generations.(KJV)

'...an ordinance for ever throughout your generations.'

Numbers 10:10

"10Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your God: I am the LORD your God." (KJV)

It was "...a responsibility of the Levitical priesthood in declaring the "beginning of the months", and thus control of the calendar and its knowledge could be expected to have been passed down from generation to generation via the hereditary priesthood. However, after the Temple was destroyed in 70 CE the Levitical priesthood vanished from Jewish history along with its influence over the calendar. No writings from this priesthood have survived from before the destruction of the Temple, except for the fact that Josephus was a priest who was born in 37 CE and died c. 100. While his writings exist, none of them were written before the destruction of the Temple, and he does not discuss when a month begins in any direct way. He never mentions any astronomical calculations being done by the ancient Jews, and neither does Philo of Alexandria (c. 20 BCE - c. 50 CE)."

Numbers 10:11

"11And it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from off the tabernacle of the testimony." (KJV)

20th day of the 2nd month in the 2nd year.

Numbers 10:17

"17And the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set forward, bearing the tabernacle." (KJV)

The Gershonites and the tribe of Merari carried the tabernacle.

Numbers 10:21

"21And the Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary: and the other did set up the tabernacle against they came." (KJV)

The Kohathites/Qehathites carried the sanctuary.

Numbers Chapter 11

Numbers 11:3

"3Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying," (KJV)

Here, YHWH is referring to the children of Israel as Israel when he says, "and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin".

Numbers 11:4

"4And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?" (KJV)

This verse specifically states that it was the mixed multitude that lusted after the flesh.  In Exodus 32 it was 'the people' who built the golden calf.

Numbers 11:20

"20But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?" (KJV)

Be careful what you pray for.  YHWH has a sense of ironic humor.

Numbers 11:26

"But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp." (KJV)

When the seventy elders were being chosen, there was a need to deal with the problem of two extra elders that had to be excluded from the group. There were twelve tribes to represent and only seventy sages allowed. The most equitable distribution would have allowed six elders per tribe, but this would have added up to seventy two, more than the number allowed. The decision was taken to write seventy two names on lots and pick the seventy elders by drawing the first seventy names. Eldad and Meidad, both of whose names had been included in the draw, decided to solve the selection problem by not showing up to the drawing.

For this act of generosity and humility they were awarded with the gift of prophecy, and they began to prophesize in the camp. Their prophecy: "Moses will die in the desert and Joshua will lead the Jews into Israel."

Numbers 11:31-34

"31And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day's journey on this side, and as it were a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth." (KJV)

"32And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp." (KJV)

"33And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague." (KJV)

So God gave the people meat to eat and then killed them before they could eat it?<

"34And he called the name of that place Kibrothhattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted." (KJV)

Remember, the manna fell within the camp.  In order for the people to get to the quail, they had to trample over the manna.  Talk about rejecting God's provision!  No wonder Adonai Tza'vaot (the Lord of Host) wiped them out.  How could they trample underfoot something so miraculous, something their fathers had never known, for something as common as quail?  Especially when they had flocks and herds?

Numbers Chapter 12

Numbers 12:3

"(Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)" (KJV)

NIV Translation Difference

'And the man Mosheh was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.' (The ISR Scriptures)

'Now the man Moshe was very meek, above all the men that were upon the face of the earth.' (The Restoration Scriptures)

'And the man Moses was very depressed, more than any man who was on the face of the earth.' (Hebraic Roots Bible)

'Now the man Moshe was very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the earth.' (Hebraic Roots Bible)

Numbers Chapter 13

Numbers 13:8

"8Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun." (KJV)

Interesting that Oshea/Hoshĕa is NOT identified as a descendant of Joseph/Yosĕph as Manasseh/Menashsheh is in verse 11.

Numbers 13:11

"11Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi." (KJV)

Interesting that Manasseh/Menashsheh IS identified as a descendant of Joseph/Yosĕph while Oshea/Hoshĕa is NOT.

Numbers 13:22

22And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)(KJV)

I think these are the Anakim.

Numbers 13:25

25And they returned from searching of the land after forty days. (KJV)

40 days of searching the land.

Numbers 13:33

"And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight." (KJV)

NIV Translation Difference

'"And we saw there the Nephilim, sons of Anaq, of the Nephilim. And we were like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and so we were in their eyes."' (The ISR Scriptures)

'And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who came from the Nephilim: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. 475' (The Restoration Scriptures)

475  It is possible that these Nephilim were unclean spirits in the spirit realm after the flood, who later came back into the daughters of men. Or, Nephilim may simply be a term for fallen giants, not connected with the events of Genesis 6.

The spies first felt that they were like grasshoppers in their own eyes. Only after they themselves felt that theywere like grasshoppers did they believe that others perceived them as grasshoppers in their eyes.

Ironically, the way you see yourself is the exact way in which you'll think how others feel about you. And the only way to ever change how you think others view you is to actually change the way in which you see yourself. Doing this can make all the difference in the world.

Numbers Chapter 14

Numbers 14:1-5

The congregation murmured against the spies report of giants in the land of Caanan.

Numbers 14:6

"6And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:" (KJV)

Do Jehoshua/Yahusha and Caleb/Kalĕb symbolize Ephraim/Ephrayim and Judah/Yahudah?

Numbers 14:6-9

Jehoshua/Yahusha and Caleb/Kalĕb tried to talk the congregation out of their fear.

Numbers 14:10

"10But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.:" (KJV)

Definitely NOT a good sign.

Numbers 14:11-35

YHWH was going to destroy the congregation but Moses spoke in their defense. YHWH said all the congregation except Jehoshua/Yahusha, Caleb/Kalĕb and the children of the congregation would die in the wilderness.

Numbers 14:24

"24But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it." (KJV)

Do Jehoshua/Yahusha and Caleb/Kalĕb symbolize Ephraim/Ephrayim and Judah/Yahudah?

Numbers 14:30

"30Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun." (KJV)

Do Jehoshua/Yahusha and Caleb/Kalĕb symbolize Ephraim/Ephrayim and Judah/Yahudah?

Numbers 14:31

31But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.(KJV)

When did the Hebrews say their children should be a prey? I am curious as, at one time, the Hebrews were sacrificing their children to Molek. I wonder if their is a connection here.

Numbers 14:36-38

YHWH killed the ten (10) spies who gave the bad report with a plague.

Numbers 14:39-45

Moses tells the people of their curse and the next morning they decide to go against the Caanites.  Moses tells them not to as YHWH will not be with them but they go anyway and are defeated.

This is a very important lesson for today. The Jews claim that they are returning to the land and can now drive out the Caanites as they were instructed to do back in the days of Moses. This story clearly shows that if you do not do what YHWH wants you to do when HE wants you to do it and HE pronounces judgement (like HE did to the house of Israel AND the house of Judah) then you cannot go back and obey on your own terms.

Deuteronomy 1:43

Numbers 14:40

"40And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned." (KJV)

Once the people realized that they were being cursed by YHWH, THEN they decided to do as they were told.  However, then it was too late.

Numbers Chapter 15

Numbers 15:15

"15One ordinance shall be both for you of the congregation, and also for the stranger that sojourneth with you, an ordinance for ever in your generations: as ye are, so shall the stranger be before the LORD." (KJV)

Numbers Chapter 16

Numbers 16:10

"10And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also?" (KJV)

This verse would seem to indicate that the Levites are not priests.

Numbers 16:35

"35And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense." (KJV)

The 250 men that offered incense died just like Aaron's sons had.

Numbers 16:36-40

YHWH instructs Moses to take the censors of the men who died during Korah's rebellion and to beat them into plating to cover the alter as a memorial to the children of Israel that no one not of the line of Aaron is to come before YHWH with incense.

Numbers 16:41-50

The children of Israel murmured against Moses and accused him of killing the children of Israel.  YHWH released a plague and Moses instructs Aaron to go out with a censor and stand between the living and the dead.  14,700 people died over this incident.

Numbers 16:49

"49Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, beside them that died about the matter of Korah." (KJV)

14,700 people died from the plague.

Numbers Chapter 17

Numbers 17:2

"2Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of every one of them a rod according to the house of their fathers, of all their princes according to the house of their fathers twelve rods: write thou every man's name upon his rod." (KJV)

These rods seemed to represent headship of the tribes.
I wonder if there is a link between the rods (or stakes) mentioned in Matthews 16:24, Luke 9:23, Ezekiel 37:16, and Zechariah 11:7,10

Numbers Chapter 18

Numbers 18:16

"16And those that are to be redeemed from a month old shalt thou redeem, according to thine estimation, for the money of five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs." (KJV)

The ceremony of the red heifer used to cleanse the high priest.

Numbers 19:10

"10And he that gathereth the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them, for a statute for ever." (KJV)

Numbers Chapter 22

The story of Balaam/Bil'am and his talking ass.

Numbers 22:4

'4And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field.  And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.' (KJV)

Moab and Midian had been enemies Genesis 36:35 but were forced to make peace with each other against Isreal.

Numbers 22:28

"And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?" (KJV)

It is noteworthy that the word usually employed by the Torah for "times" is pe'amim, but in this verse an unusual form, regalim, usually denoting "festivals," is used. Rashi, quoting Chazal, notes:

"These three times — it was a hint that he wanted to uproot the Jewish nation, who celebrate three pilgrim festivals each year." (Rashi loc. cit.)

The holy Arizal adapts this idea to suggest that Bilam's intention was not to destroy the nation in its entirety, but to eliminate from it the observance of the three festivals. Why should our adversary, Bilam, desire to eradicate the observance of this mitzvah more than any other?

The Mishnah teaches: "Those who have an evil eye, an arrogant spirit, and an insatiable soul are pupils of the wicked Bilam." (Avos 5:22)

Numbers 27:15-15

Moses asks YHWH to set a man over the congregation and be their shephard.

When Moses was told by God that he wouldn't be able to lead the Jewish people into the land of Israel, his knee-jerk response was not focused on his own fate, but rather to make sure that the Jews would still have someone in his absence who would continue to lead them. This is why Moses was one of the greatest leaders ever.

The ability to focus on other people's needs when the "going gets tough" and not on your own wants and desires is the true definition of leadership. Being a leader is not about the recognition or accolades you might receive, but rather it's the constant focus on the specific needs that are most important to those who are following you. Therefore, if for one reason or another you're no longer able to lead them, you will automatically put their fears and concerns as your primary focus.

The world is littered with countless numbers of cases where, once someone was asked to stop doing something, he ceased to care about the people whom his work was effecting. It makes you wonder if he really ever truly cared about them in the first place. The true colors of a leader are on full display when he leaves his leadership position and to see if he ever gives even a passing thought to all those who believed in him, his vision, and his dream.

Numbers 33:51-52

"51 - Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye are passed over Jordan into the land of Canaan;" (KJV)

"52 - Then ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures, and destroy all their molten images, and quite pluck down all their high places:" (KJV)

"A young man once said to me that he could see nothing wrong with the Christmas tree because he did not bow down and worship it. He misunderstood. Do we? The first commandment covers this particular aspect of idolatry. If one was bowing down to the tree, that would be what he was worshipping."

"The second commandment has to do with the way we worship, in spirit and truth. Christmas—and its trappings like the Christmas tree—is not part of the way God commanded we worship. It is not part of the truth of God. Therefore, the Christmas tree is a component of an idolatry created when man desires to worship God as he devises rather than as God instructs. So he breaks the second commandment even though he never bows down to the tree."

Numbers 33:55

55But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.(KJV)

This is exactly what happened when they failed to drive out the inhabitants of the land.

Numbers 33:56

56Moreover it shall come to pass, that I shall do unto you, as I thought to do unto them.(KJV)

Does this mean that YHWH will drive the Hebrews from the land?.
