³'Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.'

⁴'And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.'

⁵'For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.'

YHWH would not walk with them into the land because they were stubborn and stiff necked.

²⁷"How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me." (KJV)

²⁸"Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:" (KJV)

²⁹"Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward which have murmured against me." (KJV)

³⁰"Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun." (KJV)

This is a very important lesson for today. The Jews claim that they are returning to the land and can now drive out the Caanites as they were instructed to do back in the days of Moses. This story clearly shows that if you do not do what YHWH wants you to do when HE wants you to do it and HE pronounces judgement (like HE did to the house of Israel AND the house of Judah) then you cannot go back and obey on your own terms.

Deuteronomy 1:43-45

¹'And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.'  (KJV)

²'And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.'  (KJV)

³'And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.'  (KJV)

⁴'And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.'  (KJV)

⁵'And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.'  (KJV)

⁶'And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.'  (KJV)

⁷'And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;'  (KJV)

⁸'And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.'  (KJV)

⁹'And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.'  (KJV)

The children of Israel committed whoredom with the daughters of Moab and YHWH killed 24,000 of them with a plague.

⁴³'So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went presumptuously up into the hill.' (KJV)

⁴⁴'And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.' (KJV)

⁴⁵'And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.' (KJV)

This is how YHWH handles direct disobedience.

⁶'Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.' (KJV)

⁷'Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the LORD.' (KJV)

⁸'Also in Horeb ye provoked the LORD to wrath, so that the LORD was angry with you to have destroyed you.' (KJV)

Moses tells the people never to forget that they were NOT given the land because they were righteous but rather because of the wickedness of the people living in the land.

²⁴'Ye have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you.' (KJV)

The entire chapter talks about the blessings and the curses.

¹⁶'And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.'

YHWH certainly predicted this one correctly.

¹⁷'Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?'

YHWH certainly predicted this one correctly.

¹⁸'And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.'

The people brought this misery upon themselves.

¹⁹'Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.'

YHWH wrote a song that would be a witness against the children of Israel.

²⁰'For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant.'

YHWH certainly predicted this one correctly. The people broke his covenant.

²¹'And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware.'

YHWH knew what the people would do in the future.

²⁷'For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death? '

Moses certainly predicted this one correctly.

²⁹'For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.'

⁴"And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments:" (KJV)

⁵"Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel." (KJV)

⁶"But if ye shall at all turn from following me, ye or your children, and will not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship them: " (KJV)

⁷"Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people: " (KJV)

This is a conditional promise and it appears that the children of Israel received the second option which was to be cast out of HIS sight.

²'And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, but not as the kings of Israel that were before him.'

 

¹⁵'And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, thatthey should not do like them.'

¹⁹'Also Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.'

²⁰'And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight.'

⁴'Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.

¹⁵'And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. '

YHWH does not listen to killers.

²¹'How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.'

⁶'I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;'

The Hebrews were chosen to be a light for the Gentiles.

²²'But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel.'

The people have rejected YHWH.

¹²'Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever.'

¹³'Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD.'

¹⁴'Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:'

¹⁵'And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.'

YHWH is telling the people if they will admit their sins and repent he will take them back.

⁶'If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt: '

⁷'Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever. '

²⁵'Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised; '

²⁶'Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.'

¹⁰'They are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers. '

⁹'Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them.'

¹⁵"Shalt thou reign, because thou closest thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him?" (KJV)

YHWH will do good to the good figs.

⁸'And as the evil figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so evil; surely thus saith the LORD, So will I give Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the residue of Jerusalem, that remain in this land, and them that dwell in the land of Egypt:'

⁹'And I will deliver them to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth for their hurt, to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places whither I shall drive them.'

¹⁰'And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, among them, till they be consumed from off the land that I gave unto them and to their fathers.'

YHWH will do bad things to the evil figs.

²'Thus saith the LORD; Stand in the court of the LORD's house, and speak unto all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the LORD's house, all the words that I command thee to speak unto them; diminish not a word:

³'If so be they will hearken, and turn every man from his evil way, that I may repent me of the evil, which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings.

⁴'And thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; If ye will not hearken to me, to walk in my law, which I have set before you,

⁵'To hearken to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I sent unto you, both rising up early, and sending them, but ye have not hearkened;

⁶'Then will I make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth. '

¹⁸'Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spake to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.'

¹¹'For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet I will not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.'

¹⁵'Why criest thou for thine affliction? thy sorrow is incurable for the multitude of thine iniquity: because thy sins were increased, I have done these things unto thee.'

No use crying when you've brought the problem on yourself.

A new covenant

³²'Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:'

YHWH's people broke the original covenant.

³³'But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.'

YHWH will write his new covenant in our hearts.

³⁴'And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. '

³⁶'If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.'

Sounds pretty important to me.

³⁷'Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.'

This entire chapter speaks of the sins and abominations of Jerusalem. Since the house of Israel (10 northern tribes) have already been sent into exile by the Assyrians, this chapter must be referring to the house of Judah or the 3 southern tribes of Benjamin, Judah and Levi.
