Introduction:

The purpose of this page is to discuss the different types of covenants and their 'rules'. On this page I have tried to keep it to general covenants and have used other pages to refer to specific covenants and their specific 'rules'

The Book of Hebrews Chapter 8 Verses 6-8

6But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
7For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
8For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:(KJV)

I think a closer look at the book of Hebrews chapter 8 is appropriate. While verses 6 & 7 can appear to be placing the fault on the covenant, verse 8 makes it crystal clear where the fault lies. The FAULT in the first covenant was THEM and NOT the covenant.

Note the plural pronoun "them." To this time, there was only one covenant, so if he were referring to the covenant, he would have had to say, "for finding fault with it." But God did not find fault with the Old Covenant. Everything that God does is of the highest order, and the covenant He gave to Israel was more than adequate for His intention at the time. It was not the covenant that failed. It was them—the people—who failed. They did not live up to what the covenant stipulated.

Everything God does is pure, right, and true. People who say the law is done away and the Old Covenant was a failure imply that there was something wrong with what God gave the people to do. God does not do things like that! We cannot afford to allow that kind of thinking to get into our minds because it puts us on the trail to error and will not help us in our relationship with God. It will greatly affect the way we approach the Bible—the Word of God.

The Old Covenant is part of the Word of God, and Proverbs 30:5 says, "Every word of God is pure." Therefore, the problem was not with the covenant but was in the people. Specifically, the problem was in their hearts; they were uncircumcised, to use the Bible's term. Their hearts were filled with self-will and therefore rejected what God had to say.

The Berean

A covenant such as our Heavenly Father made with man is permanent and everlasting. Everything God Almighty does is perfect. WE are the ones that disobeyed HIS instructions, there was/is nothing wrong with the Word of God Almighty.

In many regards, a covenant is very much like a modern business contract.

If I have a permanent contract with someone I could decide to add an annual performance bonus to the lifelong contract. I would draft a NEW contract with the bonus language added in and then ask the partner or partners of the contract to see and approve. Once approved we would have a NEW contract and the OLD contract would be done away with and no longer legally binding. Even though they are the same in every way but the performance bonus, the contract would be considered legally NEW and does away with the OLD contract that is the same in every other regard.

The same would be true if I were to remove a penalty clause. If I were to remove the $25 fee for overdraft checks received, I would draft up an identical contract with the service fee removed. If the contract is approved by all parties the NEW contract will have done away with the OLD contract even though they are the same except for one sentence.

The 'bonus clauses' that God Almighty added and the 'penalty clauses' HE removed are clearly delineated in the Scriptures. Near as I can tell, all the rest is pretty much the same.

Scriptural Covenants:

  • Edonic covenant
  • Adamic covenant
  • Noahide/Noahic covenant (Gen 6:18, Gen 9:8-17 )
  • Abrahamic covenant #1 (Covenant of the pieces) (Gen 15:17-18)
  • Abrahamic covenant #2 (Covenant of circumcision) (Genesis 17:2-21)
  • Mount Sinai covenant
  • Davidic covenant
  • Messianic covenant

Four (4) Main Types Of Covenants:

Covenant Rules:

NOTE: The following rules of covenants require scriptural references:

  • Covenant - from 'barah' (1262) (in the sense of cutting (like 'bara'' (1254))); a compact (because made by passing between pieces of flesh):--confederacy, (con-)feder(-ate), covenant, league.

  • Covenants were eternal - Galatians 3:15

  • Something of value was typically exchanged

  • Covenant stones or monuments were typically erected on the site of the covenant.

Scripture References:

This verse is referring to the Noahide Covenant.

9And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you;

10And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.

11And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.

12And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

13I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.

14And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:

15And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

16And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.

8And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.(KJV)

The Mosaic or Mount Sanai covenant is read to the people from a book that Moses had.
The covenant is ratified in blood making it a blood covenant.

27And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.

28And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.(KJV)

1"And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you." (KJV)

Translation Difference

"And the Messenger of YHWH came up from Gilgal to Bokim, and said, "I led you up from Mitsrayim and brought you to the land of which I swore to your fathers, and I said, 'I do not break My covenant with you," (The ISR Scriptures)

"And the Malach-YHWH 711 came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Mitzrayim, and have brought you to the land that I swore to your ahvot; and I said, I will never break My brit with you." (The Restoration Scriptures)

711 - The same Guardian-Metatron that has YHWH's Name speaking in the first person is no doubt Yahshua.

The KJV "An angel of the LORD..." seems to be a mistranslation. Depending on one's belief, either 'God the Father' or 'God the Son' brought the children of Israel up out of the land of Egypt/Mitsarim. Since this verse mentions an angel and not God Almighty, it MUST be referring to 'God the Son' or "THE angel of the LORD...".

1Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee. (KJV)

9There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt. (KJV)

The covenant with the children of Israel.

10And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. (KJV)

34And Ben-hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away. (KJV)

4'The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.' (KJV)

5'The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.' (KJV)

These verses are referring to the Everlasting Covenant
These verses are referring to the whole world and not just the Hebrew people.
This is the reason, according to Scriptures, why the earth shall be burned in the day of judgment.

'31Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: '(KJV)

'32"Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: '(KJV)

'33But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. '(KJV)

'34And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. (KJV)

40"And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me." (KJV)

18"For thus saith the LORD; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel; " (KJV)

'5They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten. '(KJV)

'60Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant.'(KJV)

'61Then thou shalt remember thy ways, and be ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy covenant.'(KJV)

'62And I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD:'(KJV)

4"They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off." (The Restoration Scriptures)

Transgressed the covenant.
Set up by Kings not YHWH.

4They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field.(The Restoration Scriptures)

'34My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.' (KJV)

5'He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant.' (KJV)

9'He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.' (KJV)

5"Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?" (KJV)

The Covenant of Circumcision.

I think a closer look at the book of Hebrews chapter 8 is appropriate. While verses 6 & 7 can appear to be placing the fault on the covenant, verse 8 makes it crystal clear where the fault lies. The FAULT in the first covenant was THEM and NOT the covenant.

"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law." - 1 John 3:4

16This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;(KJV)

20'Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,' (KJV)

This refers to the Messiah being known before the foundation of the world. This meant that YHWH knew that the Messiah would die for our sins before any of the covenants were established.

12'And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.'

13'Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:'

14'That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.'

15'Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.'

16'Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.'

17'And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.'

18'For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.'

19'Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.'

These verses are referring to the Covenant of Promise given to Abraham

"6Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man." (KJV)

SUZERAINTY:

Suzerainty is a situation in which a region or people is a tributary to a more powerful entity, which controls its foreign affairs while allowing the tributary vassal state internal autonomy. The dominant entity in the suzerainty relationship, or the more powerful entity itself, is called a suzerain. The term suzerainty was originally used to describe the relationship between the Ottoman Empire and its surrounding regions. It differs from sovereignty in that the tributary enjoys some (often limited) self-rule.

Hittite Suzerainty Treaty

  • Preamble: Identifies the parties involved in the treaty
  • Prologue: Lists the deeds already performed by the Suzerain on behalf of the vassal
  • Stipulations: Terms to be upheld by the vassal for the life of the treaty
  • Provision for annual public reading: A copy of the treaty was to be read aloud annually in the vassal state for the purpose of renewal
  • Divine witness to the treaty: These usually include the deities of both the Suzerain and the vassal
  • Blessings if the stipulations of the treaty are upheld and curses if the stipulations are not upheld
  • Sacrificial Meal: Both parties would share a meal to show their participation in the treaty
