Introduction:

The purpose of this page is to document eternal promises that YHWH made. These are significant in that YHWH will never go back on his word. Since man has sinned (repeatedly) and broken most (if not all) the covenants, YHWH has needed to modify certain covenants so HE can still keep HIS word even though mankind has not.
Since YHWH knows the beginning from the end HE would not have made these promises unless HE knew that HE could keep them. Therefore, I believe that any man made understanding must be formed in light of these eternal promises.

Scripture References:

8And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying,

9And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you;

10And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.

11And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.

12And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

13I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.

14And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:

15And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

16And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.

17And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth. (KJV)

YHWH's rainbow covenant.

12And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

13He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

14I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:

15But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.

16And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. (KJV)

YHWH is telling the prophet Nathan, that HE promises to establish the throne of David's kingdom forever through David's son (Solomon).
YHWH is promising to establish David's house, throne, and kingdom forever.

30And Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces:

The 'kingdom' is devided into 12 pieces.

31And he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee:

10 pieces of the kingdom are given to Jeroboam.

32(But he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:)

Does this mean 1 or 2 pieces for Solomon?
YHWH has chosen Jerusalem.

33Because that they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in mine eyes, and to keep my statutes and my judgments, as did David his father.

According to the prophet Ahijah, David kept YHWH's statutes and judgements.

34Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant's sake, whom I chose, because he kept my commandments and my statutes:

35But I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it unto thee, even ten tribes.

36And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light alway before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there. (KJV)

The prophet Ahijah is relating the word of YHWH to Jeroboam regarding the promise YHWH had made to King David.

4Nevertheless for David's sake did the LORD his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem: (KJV)

19Yet the LORD would not destroy Judah for David his servant's sake, as he promised him to give him alway a light, and to his children. (KJV)

7Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever. (KJV)
